CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH

Is Your Business Cyber Secure?

Five simple questions every small business owner should be able to answer.

Cybersecurity isn't just a concern for large corporations. Small businesses depend on email, banking, customer records, accounting systems, and connected technology every day. A single compromised account or system outage can disrupt operations.

This five-point checklist is a practical place to start. You don't need to be an IT expert to understand the questions, but knowing the answers can make a real difference.

MULTIFACTOR AUTHENTICATION. Are all important business accounts protected with multifactor authentication (MFA)?

MULTIFACTOR AUTHENTICATION

Are all important business accounts protected with multifactor authentication (MFA)?

MFA requires an additional verification method beyond a password. Prioritize business email, banking, administrative accounts, and cloud applications. Phishing-resistant methods, such as security keys or passkeys, are preferable where supported.

PASSWORD SECURITY. Does everyone use unique passwords for business accounts?

Does everyone use unique passwords for business accounts?

Reusing passwords can put multiple accounts at risk. Use a reputable password manager and unique passwords for each account. Never share passwords through email or text messages.

UPDATES AND DEVICE PROTECTION. Are your computers, applications, and network devices regularly updated and protected?

Are your computers, applications, and network devices regularly updated and protected?

Software updates fix known vulnerabilities. Enable automatic security updates where appropriate, use endpoint protection, and make sure company devices are managed securely.

BACKUP AND RECOVERY. Do you have reliable backups, and has anyone tested restoring your business data?

BACKUP AND RECOVERY

Do you have reliable backups, and has anyone tested restoring your business data?

A backup is only useful if you can recover your information. Protect backups from unauthorized changes, maintain separate recovery copies where appropriate, and periodically test restoration.

INCIDENT PREPAREDNESS. Would your team know what to do if an account were compromised or your systems stopped working tomorrow?

INCIDENT PREPAREDNESS

Would your team know what to do if an account were compromised or your systems stopped working tomorrow?

Every business should know who to contact, how to report a suspicious email, and what steps to take during a security incident. A simple written response plan is better than figuring everything out during an emergency.

Please note: Educational self-check only; not a vulnerability scan, formal security assessment, compliance determination, or security certification. A full score does not mean the business is secure.
